Buffalo, situated on the extreme western corner on the eastern shores of Lake Erie in New York State. The population is approximately 246,000 people, down from a high in 1950 Of 580,132. Buffalo was settled in 1789 as a small trading community and incorporated in 1832. The name of the city comes from the French and Indians who called the creek on which it sits, “Beau Fleuve.” In the war of 1812 Buffalo was burned to the ground by the British but roared back as an important destination due to its unique position close to Canada and the Great Lakes which positioned it perfectly as a gateway to the interior of the U.S.
During the middle 1800’s Buffalo was also an important stop on the “Underground Railroad” a means of conveying runaway slaves to Canada and freedom.
